What is the purpose for Books 1-4 in the Odyssey? What information from the story allows you to determine this purpose (this means use direct evidence to prove ideas)?

  • Please use specific ideas from the story and direct passages to prove your ideas. Also, consider the class discussions that we had.

I think the author’s main purpose in writing paragraphs 1-4 is to give you the setting and events that are happening in the beginning. I know this because these 4 paragraphs tell you where all the characters are and how they begin their journeys. It tells you how Odysseus is trapped on an island and Telemachus (Odysseus’s son) has to begin his journey.

The purpose of books 1 to four is to inform us of a beginning of a series of invents that prove Telemachus is becoming a man. He shows hes becoming a man by taking charge and tell his mother what to do when she is upset with the man singing. He also shows when he's being a man when he talks to the suitors and tells them to get out of his house. Telemachus even looks like a man because many people, like Menelaus who believed he looks exactly like his father, have commented on how he has grown up. One quote from Menelaus was, "His hands and feet are just like Odysseus';so is his hair; with the shape of his head and the expression of his eyes." Telemachus also sounds like his father as said by Helen. So as you can see the first chapters were to describe Telemachus and how hes becoming a man to go save his father.

The purpose of the books 1-4 was to give the reader an understanding of what the rest of the story is going to be based on. To back my statement up, a specific quote from Telemachus was, “My mother tells me I am the on of Odysseus.” The other Greeks see Odysseus in him. A quote from someone was, “You talk just like him too, no one would say that people of such difference could speak so alike.” Someone else said that Telemachus was just like his father Odysseus. In the story, it says that Odysseus is gone, and to prove that Odysseus is still alive, Telemachus goes on a journey to find his father. So like I said, In the first four books, I believe it is giving us the understanding of what the book is going to be based on.

I think the purpose of the books 1-4 is too set up the story of what happened to odysseus and to tell a little about whats happening to telemachus, odysseus's son. Also these chapters tell you about telemachus's journey to become a man, his journey is from Pylos to Sparta. Anopther purpose in might have is to explain whats happening to Penelope after odysseus left and now all the suitors are in her house.

I think the purpose of the first four books in "the Odyssey" were to make the reader left wondering. I think this because there are many unkown things that the reader doesn't know after reading the books. Such as, if Odysseus is still alive. Also we don't know if Telemachus will find his father so that his mother and him won't have to deal with the suitors anymore. In conclusion, that is the purpose of books 1-4 in the "Odyssey".

The purpose of books 1 through 4 in the odyssey is to show what is happening to telemachus since his father is "lost" or "dead". Also telemachus finds out from menelaus in books three and four that his father is alive but is being held captive by calypso on her island that his father is still alive. Also in the 4th book we find out that the suitors are planning to sabotage telemachus when he comes home but the gods are supposedly going to keep him safe from harm. lastly we figure out who the characters are and their place in the story

The purpose of the books 1-4 in "The Odyssey," by Homer, is to inform the readers what is going on. These books tell the setting and about the characters. The main conflict is about Odysseus not making it home from Trojan War when all of the Greek heroes have made it home safely. Telemachus, Odysseus’s son tries to learn about his dad. He wants to prove to people that he is still alive. Also the books explain about the suitors, who come into people’s houses and live with them. The house owners bath them, feed them, and sometimes give them gifts. Lastly, Telemachus is followed by a mentor named Athena. She predicts that Odysseus is still alive also. This is the purpose of the books 1-4.

I think that the purpose of books 1-4 of the Odyssey where to give background information on Odysseus’s son Telemachus and his knowledge of his father. The first four books in the Odyssey are about Telemachus. In book 1 he is introduced and speaks to Athene( who is in the form of Telemachus’ friend Mentes. She makes him aware of the banishment of his father. Telemachus then goes to the assembly to speak his opinion of his father’s banishment.

The purpose of books 1-4 was to get to really know something about Telemachus and Odysseus. In book one, they introduced Odysseus and how he went to the Trojan War and did not return for 10 years. But, due to the fact that he went by water took him even longer to get home because Poseidon the water god and he did not like Odysseus because he killed his Cyclops son. Later on they talked about how Odysseus's son Telemachus took charge in the village where he and his mother lived. Telemachus then started to be like his father and take charge. For example, he told his mother that she needs to go busy herself with daily duties, for he is the master of the house now. Also, he told off the suitors. So, the reasons for books 1-4 are to get to know Telemachus and his leadership and what happened to Odysseus after the Trojan War.

The purpose for books one-four in the Odessey is to show the reader how Telemachus changes from a boy to a man. In the Odessey you learn that Telemachus has never met his father Odysseus, due to the fact, that Odysseus had to go to war when Telemachus was just a baby. In order for Telemachus to change from a boy to a man he has to go on a voyage to prove himself. Telemachus sets out to try and find his father(no one in the book knows if Odysseus is dead or alive(accept for the gods.) In chapters one and two you see that Telemachus is changing, when he stand up for himself, “The suitors bit their lips as they heard him,and marveled at the boldness of his speech” (12). The suitors are 103 men of surrounding islands and Ithaca that want to marry Penelope (Telemachus’s mother.) Telemachus starts to take the role of the man in the household when he tells his mother (when she is crying) “ Go then, within the house and busy yourselves with your daily duties...for it is I who am master here” (11). The first few chapters show the start of the transformation from a boy to a man; this new man will later have to take the throne and be a great leader just like his father.

The purpose of books 1-4 is to inform people on where people are and why people are there. I think this because in these chapters it shows where Telemachus wants to go to find his father Odysseus is and to see if he is still alive. Another example is when Calypso holds Odysseus captive because she wants to marry him. The purpose of books 1-4 is to show where people are and why people are there.

I think the purpose of book 1-4 is to show how Telemachus is changing and becoming more and more like his father. Also I think they put book 1-4 in the book because they wanted to show Penelope’s struggles with the suitors and with Telemachus furthermore what she thinks about Odysseus ad hiiiim not returning home. This is why I think they included book 1-4 in the Odyssy.

The purpose of the first few "books"(chapters) in The Odyssey is to show how Telemachus changes to be more like his father Odysseus. We learn this through what he says, what he does and what others say about him.For example, He says to his mother "Go then within the house and busy yourself with your daily duties, your loom, your distaff, and the ordering of your servents; for speech is man's matter and mine above all others for it is I who am master here"(pg.11) This shows that he wants to like his father and that he is in demand, in control and in charge not his mother. Another example would be something that he does. For instance,"He took his place in his fathers seat [and]even the oldest counceliors made way for him"(pg.14). This shows that he was beginning to get more assertive, tough and smart just like his father Odysseus. A third example is when Nector is speaking when he says "...you talk just like him (Odysseus)too not one would say that people of such different ages could speak so much alike"(pg.28). Lastly, Menalaus menchions "His hands and feet are just like Odysseus;so his hair, with the shape of his head and the expression of his eyes"(pg.42). So,The main purpose of the first few "books"(chapters)in The Odyssey are there to show how Telemachus changes to be more like his father Odysseus.

The reason for the author writing chapters 1-4 in "The Odyssey" is to tell you about what is happening to Odysseus's family in Ithica. But more importantly his son Telemachus and the troubles he is facing right now. Telemachus's troubles are that he is losing everything he owns and possily his life to his mothers suitors. He is also coming to terms with his father being gone forever. While Odysseus's wife is refusing to marry any of the suitors causing alot of trouble. In the chapters it also shows how the gods decide Odysseus should go home and leave the island where the goddess Calypso is keeping him. So in conclusion the first 4 chapters are clearly here to show us where everyone stands in "The Odyssey".
